Expect to see smoke from Emerald Mountain prescribed burn

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue anticipates favorable conditions this week, which is expected allow a second attempt to burn the remaining slash piles on Emerald Mountain as soon as late-morning Wednesday, Dec. 20.

“It’s a matter of waiting on the right conditions,” Fire Chief Mel Stewart said in a news release. “Right now, the weather is lining up nicely.”

Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue had expected to conduct the burn in early November; however, conditions changed and the decision was made to wait. Based on the current forecast, the public should expect to see smoke from Emerald Mountain through Thursday, Dec. 21.

The burn process will take place in the Stairway to Heaven trail area. The public is asked to avoid this area during the burn operation. Routt County Dispatch has been made aware of the operation.

The prescribed burn follows an earlier effort that occurred in the same area in spring. Once finished, this will complete the disposal of remaining slash taken from Emerald Mountain during a tree removal project.
