RMYC needs people to share stories, advise youth

— The Rocky Mountain Youth Corps is searching for professionals willing to share life stories and lessons with teens and young adults.

Called Field-Based Workshop Volunteers, interested adults will meet RMYC crews in an outdoor setting for a fireside chat of sorts.

“We are looking for anyone who has a desire to share any work-related or world-based knowledge with our crews,” said Sheila Wright, development director with RMYC.

“Volunteers are always welcome to join our crew for dinner if you give us notice. We’ll throw another can of beans on the fire.”

The RMYC is a unique experience for people 16 to 25 years old.

Not only are they paid to work, mostly with the environment, the RMYC members also participate in community service and receive educational tools such as lessons learned through field-based workshops.

“The sky is the limit with what the discussion topics could be,” Wright said.

“We’ve had financial advisers come out and speak about fiscal responsibility. We had a retired couple do field-based workshops on interviewing for college, how to write a resume, cover letter. It can be anything really.”

The crews will develop questions for the volunteers, so workshop presenters should be prepared to provide answers on how he or she came to be an expert and what education choices were made in the process.

People also should come prepared to be outdoors by taking appropriate clothing, gear and water.
