Event helps homeless animals

Every time a pet owner lets his or her dog or cat have a litter, a wave sweeps through the local animal population.

“They are displacing other homeless animals,” said Lynne Cleveland-Swanson, treasurer of the Animal Assistance League of Northwest Colorado. “Thousands of animals are put down every year in this country because people don’t have their pets spayed or neutered.

“Our community is so good about so many other things, but they turn a blind eye to the spay-and-neutering issue.”

On Saturday night, the Ani–mal Assistance League will host its fourth annual fundraiser — Cats, Dogs and Wine Glasses — to raise money for homeless animals.

“We try so hard to make sure every animal that comes to the shelter has a second chance,” Cleveland-Swanson said. Last year, the fundraiser brought in $11,054.

The evening fundraiser features a wine tasting, heavy appetizers and a silent auction. This year, Vino has donated 20 varieties of wine. The silent auction includes animal-related items and packages.

Last year’s proceeds were used for medical care for several animals brought to the Steamboat Springs Animal Shelter.

One Anatolian shepherd had been attacked by other animals and came in with hundreds of bite wounds all over its body. The Animal Assistance League paid for the medical attention it needed. When the dog healed, a Steamboat family adopted him.

“He was a sheepdog, but he’s now retired,” Cleveland-Swanson said. “We spend the money to get them in good shape, and then we find them a home.”

The Animal Assistance Lea–gue also gave $1,500 to animal victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The remaining money went to spay-and-neutering financial assistance and local wildlife rehabilitation efforts.
