Ethel Cordelia Stieduhar

Oak Creek resident Ethel C. Stieduhar passed away Sept. 5, 2003, at the Doak Walker Care Center. She was 96.

Ethel was born Dec. 3, 1906, in Calhan, Colo., to Jasper and Anna Queary. Ethel’s father died of typhoid fever when she was just 2 years old.

In 1911, Ethel’s mother answered an advertisement for a cook at a mine camp in Gallup, N.M. Anna and her five children, including Ethel, traveled by train to Gallup, where she married the mine’s owner in 1912. By the age of 8, Ethel was baking bread and cooking at the mine’s boarding house.

Ethel married George Stieduhar on Oct. 24, 1925, in Gallup. The couple had two sons, George E. and Allen “Nick” Stieduhar. The family moved to Oak Creek in 1935, and George worked in the mines there until he retired. The family lived in mine housing until 1949, when they purchased a home in Oak Creek. Ethel raised rabbits and chickens to supplement the family income.

She enjoyed gardening and was very proud of her large garden.

Ethel was preceded in death by her husband and a son, George E. Stieduhar.

She is survived by a son, Allen “Nick” Stieduhar of Oak Creek, six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Sept. 12, 2003, at the Oak Creek Cemetery.
