Erin Biggs: Water is life
I want to take a minute to invite everyone in the community to our Steamboat Stands with Standing Rock Silent Auction and Fundraiser at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2 at Schmiggity’s.
The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, as well as many other natives and non-natives from around the world, are deeply concerned about the construction of a major crude-oil pipeline that passes through ancestral lands.
There are two broad issues. First, the pipeline would pass under the Missouri River (at Lake Oahe) just a half a mile upstream of the tribe’s reservation boundary, where a spill would be culturally and economically catastrophic. Second, the pipeline would pass through areas of great cultural significance, such as sacred sites and burial grounds that federal law seeks to protect.
There are water protectors in camps all along the construction sites, and they are planning to stay all winter. We are raising money to support them.
Thank you to Recycled Designs, Creekside Cafe, Heartfire Massage, Winona’s, PowerIce, Still Waters Massage, Transforming Touch Therapy, Body Flow Art, Body Tree Healing Arts, Freshies, Beau Jo’s, Cruiser’s Sub Shop, Natural Grocers, Yoga Lila, Connect Massage, Verve Salon, Pedego Steamboat and Wildhorse Cinemas for your silent auction donations and support.
