Englund on World Champs team

— Former Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club ski jumper Nita Englund will get the chance to compete on one of the biggest stages of her sport.

Englund was selected to jump in the World Championships in Falun, Sweden, later this month.

“I am so happy about making the World Championship Team,” Englund said in a U.S. Ski Team press release. “I’m glad to be in the position I am in right now, and I hope to keep the momentum going. Our team is a good mix of old and new, and there should be some good surprises in Sweden.”

Englund has been one of the team’s best jumpers this season, earning her first career podium at a Romanian World Cup event a week ago.

Englund was joined by Sarah Hendrickson, Tara Garaghty-Moats, Abby Hughes and Jessica Jerome on the women’s team. Nick Alexander and Will Rhoads will jump for the men.

The action starts for the women Thursday with the HS100 ski jumping qualification round. Finals follow the next day. A mixed-gender jump is scheduled for Feb. 22.

Women won’t jump on the bigger of the two competition hills, a HS 134 that will host a second men’s competition.
