Embellishments still closed as owners look to move on after fire, loss of busy holiday season
The owners of Embellishments of Steamboat Springs were prepared for a busy holiday season five weeks ago, but a fire in a display window during the early-morning hours of Nov. 24 changed all that.
“It is a big blow,” said Jason Edinburg, whose wife Ashley co-owns the business at 903 Lincoln Ave. with her mother, Melinda Miller. “You know, psychologically, it’s hard to be closed during this time of year, obviously with the holidays, and it’s even harder to just drive down the street and see that corner be dark.”
The doors of the downtown retail store, which specializes in unique gifts, jewelry, women’s fashion, home furnishings and fair-trade goods, has been closed for more than a month. The owners said that the business and its customers missed out on the busiest time of the year stretching from Thanksgiving through Christmas.
Edinburg said Monday that he has no idea when the store will reopen its doors to customers.
“We are not even close to having a timeline for opening yet,” he said. “Unfortunately, in a situation like this, the insurance company is going to take its time to do all the work they need to do. We haven’t even started cleaning up yet, because they’re doing a thorough fire investigation to determine cause and origin.”
Edinburg said the fire was contained to a display window, but the damage was way more significant than he had expected after arriving at the store as the fire department doused the last flames of the early-morning fire.
“There’s a lot more involved than you can imagine, and I’m learning a lot of stuff that I probably could have gone my whole life without learning,” Edinburg said. “But we’ll be back, and we will be better off for it. But right now it’s the uncertainty, and we just don’t have clarity right now. But we will get there.”
He said the family is doing its best to not let the fire negatively impact their holiday season, but the uncertainly of the situation looms.
“We have no idea what we’re capable of until we’re faced with it,” Edinburg said. “It doesn’t make sense to climb the walls. You’ve just got to stay focused, and you’ve got to stay committed and make sure there’s forward progress. You can’t get stuck in yourself, you got to have a good attitude. We will get through it.”
