Elementary school chips in for principal’s bonus

Jamie Hallman

— Strawberry Park Principal John DeVincentis did not get his pay for performance this year but he did receive his “bonus” from his staff.

The staff at Strawberry Park Elementary collected enough donations to give DeVincentis close to $1,500 to show their support for their principal.

“It totally caught me off guard but that’s the kind of people who work for this district,” DeVincentis said.

DeVincentis, who has one of the highest performing schools in the state, did not receive his pay for performance because he failed to meet some of the principal limitations criteria stated in the school board’s policy governance.

He said he really appreciated the check but felt bad teachers and support staff had donated their hard-earned money.

He said each staff member had to contribute a substantial amount to pay him for his pay-for-performance that is traditionally $1,000.

“That is a statement of appreciation,” he said.

Strawberry Park Elementary teacher Mike Johnson said “we were very happy to do it for him.”

He said he felt DeVincentis should have at least received part of his pay for performance for his hard work and for the success of the Strawberry Park Elementary students.

Johnson said most donations came from Strawberry Park employees but there were a few individuals outside the school who donated money.
