Electrical fire closes South Routt Elementary School in Yampa

South Routt Elementary
A transformer fire outside of South Routt Elementary in Yampa forced cancellation of classes on Monday and will remained closed on Tuesday.
Inspection of the building by local fire officials deemed that the building was unsafe to remain in session. Parents and guardians were asked to pick up students by 11 a.m. at the basketball court outside of the building.
Preschool students remained in session at the preschool building nearby. The elementary office was closed as well, and parents were asked to call the district office in Oak Creek.
According to Superintendent Kirk Henwood, the transformer experienced what is thought to be a short. Since the transformer serviced the boiler system in the building, it was decided to keep the building closed through Tuesday to ensure that the HVAC system was functioning properly.
