Election day in Hayden and Oak Creek
April 5, 2004
Steamboat Springs — Officials in Oak Creek and Hayden are encouraging voters in the towns to come to the polls today.
“In a small town, one vote can definitely make a difference,” Oak Creek Town Clerk Nancy Crawford said.
Hayden and Oak Creek hold Town Board elections today.
In the past, many Oak Creek elections haven’t drawn enough candidates for all the open positions. That’s not so this year. There are two candidates for mayor and eight candidates for three trustee spots.
The two candidates for mayor are incumbent Kathy “Cargo” Rodeman and Bill Norris.
The candidates for town trustee are incumbents Jim Eskridge, Clyde Moore and Bill Paxton, and challengers Stephen “Spike” Beven, Karen Halterman, Kelly Lipsie, Reta McNutt, Kenton Schmidt. Board trustees are elected at large with the top three being elected.

Voters in the Oak Creek municipal election also will decide whether term limits for town officials should be taken away. In the mid-1990s, Colorado put term limits in place for elected officials. Those limits can be taken away in towns and cities through a vote of the people.
In 1998, Oak Creek residents voted against an initiative to take away term limits, but they will consider the issue again today.
Oak Creek voters can cast votes between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. at Town Hall in downtown Oak Creek.
In Hayden, Mayor Chuck Grobe is running uncontested for his third consecutive term.
The four candidates running for three trustee spots are incumbents Ken Gibbon, Lorraine Johnson and Richard P. “Festus” Hagins and challenger Richard Bush.
Hayden voters can vote between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. at Town Hall in downtown Hayden. Both polling precincts will vote at the same location.
“We sure would encourage people to come out and vote,” said Hayden Town Clerk Lisa Johnston. “Historically, we don’t have a huge voter turnout. … But we would like people to take pride in their community and come out and vote for those who will represent them.”
