Elaine Dermody: Preventing gun violence in our schools
School gun violence has lately received a lot of press nationally and locally as well it should. I am not a fan of putting guns in our schools, which does not address the underlying cause, and just the idea of adding staff and guns into our schools seems undesirable not to mention costly.
I would encourage school officials and interested parents to investigate the program “Sandy Hook Promise” started by parents after the shooting at their school in 2012. That program has trained millions of teachers and students to address the underlying problems in efforts to prevent further school shootings. The program has been featured on national news and information about it is available on the web.
