Winter Works one to check out

— I walked into the Depot Art Center Tuesday morning to find volunteers for this year’s Steamboat Springs Arts Council Winter Works laughing and smiling. It was like walking in on a group of children opening Christmas presents.

These adults walked around the main gallery with artwork in their hands looking for the perfect spots to hang paintings. My entrance didn’t seem to disrupt their work or their energy. Everyone wanted to talk about the fine art exhibit.

As I looked around the room at the different art people submitted, it made me wish I had some level of artistic ability.

In art class my freshman year of high school I remember having to draw portraits of a classmate.

I made the guy look like a cross between a pig and a horse.

I have yet to experience an opening reception at the Depot for an exhibit. But the one beginning today seems like it will be full of energy.

Winter Works will provide word games throughout the evening.

A bowl full of cut-out magazine words will sit on a table for people to create their own wordplay (the theme of Winter Works), while a piece of sheet metal with magnetic words hangs on the wall for more creativity.

A poetry activity will be available for a cost that benefits a local charity.

One of my favorite pieces in the exhibit is the work by Oakland, Calif., resident Karen Katsir, “I Learned to Read Brail with my Eyes.”

Even if you’re not a huge art lover, this is one art show to definitely check out.

It’s innovative and creative and I know you’ll walk out with a favorite.
