Small towns can offer opportunities to pursue dreams
Steamboat Springs — Chris Carbone made a good point when I was chatting with him about the Promethea Dance Project. He said there aren’t very many communities he could have come to where he and his friends could start a program such as Promethea Dance Project.
Most of Northwest Colorado doesn’t have much to do with creative dance. For some people, that presents barriers. But for others, it presents a need and an opportunity.
Carbone danced in college but realized he wasn’t the caliber of dancer that would allow him to move to Chicago, near where he grew up, to become a professional.
However, in Steamboat Springs, he could start a touring dance troupe and further pursue his interests in dancing. Others in the community have followed similar paths. From newspapers to outdoor gear stores and bands to businesses, rural culture presents opportunities unlike those of urban areas.
The guys at Ski Town Productions get to write and perform successful plays in town. The Community Players provide opportunities for anyone interested in acting experience or no experience. Young musicians, like the ones in the Earthtones, who love to drum and make music, can get local gigs and pursue their dreams.
Participate in The Longevity Project
The Longevity Project is an annual campaign to help educate readers about what it takes to live a long, fulfilling life in our valley. This year Kevin shares his story of hope and celebration of life with his presentation Cracked, Not Broken as we explore the critical and relevant topic of mental health.
More often than not, people like to list the limitations small-town life can have. But after talking to Carbone, I realized the limitations here are just opportunities in disguise.
