Steamboat Springs — Earlier this week, about 10 people snowshoed along Mount Werner catwalks like a pack of wolves hunting prey.

I was among them.

As we clonked our way through the snowy terrain on our mission to chow at Ragnar’s, a snowshoer felt the urge to help a snowboarder by giving him a push on the flat, 1.5-mile stretch of snow.

Usually, catwalks are a snowboarder’s worst nightmare, at least for this former snowboarder. If you don’t muster enough speed or catch an edge, you’re left praying that man snowshoeing your way gives you a good nudge.

But I gained a newfound respect for the catwalk during my first snowshoeing adventure Ski Corp.’s snowshoe tour and gourmet lunch.

The snowshoe trek is a beginner to intermediate walk and I found it perfectly fitting for an out-of-shape journalist. It could have been a little tougher, but when I saw the top of Thunderhead Lodge peeking over the hill ahead, I was happy to know the muscle pain in my leg would soon cease.

And thanks to the blazing sun that day, the view from almost every angle on the catwalks was breathtaking. From afar, Hahn’s Peak, the Flat Tops, Pyramid Peak and Sleeping Giant seemed to almost match the blue hue of the sky (except for the snow of course).

Passing skiers asked if we’d like to borrow their skis or suggested we might enjoy the run more on skis. But we passed on their offers, replying that we chose to see the mountain from a different perspective.

The lunch at Ragnar’s was well worth the $35 price for the tour. Note to the server: Make sure to let customers know fresh anchovies come on the Caesar salad before it’s served.

So, if you’re looking for a fun outing in Steamboat and haven’t tried the snowshoeing tour, I recommend it.

If you go, make sure you’re prepared for the hike. Then enjoy the scenery, save room for dessert at Ragnar’s and savor the wine.
