The allure of a winter sleigh ride

— Fresh snow is a good reason to be optimistic as we start the new year. As human beings we continually seek out activities that will give us the most pleasure for the least amount of money. In Steamboat Springs, snowshoeing, sledding and making snow angels are inexpensive examples.

But let’s face it, most winter activities tend to cost hundreds of dollars. One of the moderately priced activities in Steamboat is a sleigh ride.

For centuries, people used horse-drawn carriages as a means of transportation through deep snow.

Today, sleigh rides are no longer the most efficient means of travel.

But for those looking to connect with the past in a beautiful and peaceful way, sleigh rides are an alluring option.

Several ranches in and around Steamboat Springs provide evening sleigh rides, a dinner and live entertainment for large groups or couples.

Driving out to the Bar Lazy L Ranch on County Road 52, I found myself lost in a sea of snow.

As ranchers kept horses clean and fed, preparing them for a cold night and hard work, they also looked to the skies, the barometer and the local weather channel to find the forecast for the evening ride.

Gary Yeager of Bar Lazy L Ranch said weather doesn’t affect whether they would go, but Wednesday night’s ride was going to be a cold one.

However, nearly 45 people still participated in the Wednesday night sleigh rides at the Bar Lazy L Ranch bundled in their best winter attire.

Leave the tennis shoes and high heels at home be prepared for a cold winter’s night.

Catching a sleigh ride can be a solo mission, but I would recommend sharing the experience with someone preferably someone with whom you can cuddle.
