Ernesto Sirolli to speak at economic events this week

— Tammie Delaney sees the potential for economic prosperity in the Yampa Valley.

But as a small-business owner — Delaney has owned Yampa Valley Feeds in Hayden for the past 18 months — she knows it's not easy.

That's why after reading a magazine article about the Sirolli Institute, of Sacramento, Calif., she had to find a way to get the organization to Northwest Colorado. The nonprofit Sirolli Institute promotes the vitality of communities through local businesses that diversify the economy and create jobs.

Delaney succeeded. A two-day rural small business and community development forum by the Sirolli Institute will be held Thursday and Friday in Craig.

The institute's founder, Ernesto Sirolli, will speak during workshops from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. The workshops will be held in the Moffat County Pavilion at the Moffat County Fairgrounds in Craig.

Thursday's Small Business Success workshop is intended for small-business owners, entrepreneurs and anyone considering starting their own business. It will address how small-business owners can become successful by understanding how to leverage the talents of individuals to manage products, marketing and financial management.

Friday's Entrepreneur Development workshop is geared toward business owners, elected officials, economic development interests and civic leaders.

It will focus on revitalizing the regional economy with successful communities through an understanding of the region's economic development programs and services and creating a network for those support systems.

Delaney said encouraging and fostering an environment in which small businesses can succeed is her hope for the future of the Yampa Valley. And in Hayden, specifically, Delaney said she thinks there are numerous opportunities for small businesses.

"I think for our communities to thrive, the more we can foster that local ownership, the better," she said.

The workshops are sponsored by Colorado State University Extension Services, Northwest Colorado Regional Workforce Center, Yampa Valley Economic Development Council and the Craig Chamber of Commerce.

Each session costs $15 or $25 for both.

"I think it's an amazing opportunity to spark a little hope in our area," Delaney said. "The times are definitely tough. How we're going to come through, succeed and come out of a tough time in our economy is through the enthusiasm, spirit and sense of independence of small-business owners."
