Early voting starts today

Tamera Manzanares

Residents who have decided about their positions on issues and candidates can vote early today through Oct. 28 at the Routt County Courthouse annex.

“Early voting is a great way to vote — it’s convenient,” Routt County Clerk and Recorder Kay Weinland said.

Voting early while doing errands downtown or traveling to and from work may be especially convenient for residents living in areas where precincts and polling places have changed, she said.

Areas affected by the changes, which occurred after the last election, include parts of south, west and north Routt County. An updated precinct map and list of polling locations is available at http://www.co.routt.co.us.

Residents who vote early also don’t have to rely on having the time to vote on Election Day, Weinland said.

Last year, more than 50 percent of voters voted early or by absentee ballot. Friday is the last day to apply for a mailed absentee ballot.

Weinland expects voter turnout will be as good or better than turnout in past odd year, nonpartisan elections.

Presidential and gubernatorial elections may be more popular, but residents’ decision-making power is strongest at the local level, she said.

Thirty-nine percent of residents voted in the 2001-coordinated election, up from 24 percent in 1999.

“We’re reducing voter apathy locally,” Weinland said, noting that voters are more educated and have more information available to them about the issues.

The Steamboat Springs City Council elections, as well as the publicity surrounding state referendums C and D should help draw voters Nov. 1, she said.
