Eagles slow down Sailors

Melinda Mawdsley

One day after putting seven goals into the back of the net, the Steamboat Springs hockey team was shut out by Pine Creek, 2-0, on Saturday at Howelsen Ice Arena.

Pine Creek’s goalies made several great saves, and Steamboat misfired on several opportunities, Sailors coach Dave Strang said.

“We came out a little flat in the first period,” Strang said. “It was a very good, hardworking team. They scored a power play goal and a shorthanded goal against us in the first period. … We got better as the game went along, but it wasn’t enough.”

Pine Creek’s two first-period goals were the difference in the game. Both teams were held scoreless in the final 30 minutes.

The Sailors ultimately out-shot the Eagles for the remainder of the game, including an 8-2 advantage in the third period, but the offense couldn’t make a goal.

“We came out in the second period and put little things together and moved our feet and created some plays, trying to get back in the game,” Strang said.

The league loss drops Steamboat to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in the Foothills League. This is the Sailors first year in the Foothills, and Strang likes the makeup of the new league.

“I like this league much better,” he said. “All the games are good competition and tight. I’d rather play in a stronger league and grow and learn that way.”

Steamboat will host league opponent Kent Denver, the defending runner-up in the state, at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
