Durango sinks Steamboat girls to 6th place at districts

Ben Ingersoll

— Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball is state-playoff bound, but Saturday’s loss to Durango wasn’t part of the script the Sailors were looking for heading into the big dance.

Durango used red-hot second, third and fourth quarters to down Steamboat in the district tournament fifth/sixth-place game, 54-30.

Steamboat trailed by just two after the first, 9-7, but Durango blew things open, utilizing an 18-point second quarter to lead the Sailors by 13 at halftime.

It was a deficit Steamboat wouldn’t come close to closing.

The Sailors had little answer for Durango’s Katie Wiegert, who scored a game-high 21 points.

Steamboat was led in scoring by senior Maddie Robertson, who had seven points. Ashley Spitellie added six points and Kady Look pitched in five, all in the fourth quarter.

The Sailors (12-11) will know their state playoff fate Sunday afternoon when it is announced.
