Duran skis to second place

Melinda Mawdsley

Patrick Duran skied to second-place finishes in two downhill events held at Beaver Creek Saturday and Sunday.

Duran is training with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club and topped the list of downhill finishes for the local group. Duran also won a super G race at Beaver Creek earlier in the week.

“Those are great results,” ability class coach Tom Davis said. “It demonstrates he’s one of the top racers in the region.”

The Winter Sports Club racers were competing in International Ski Federation (FIS) races.

Heidi Hillenbrand led the Winter Sports Club’s female races on Saturday and Sunday, as well. Hillenbrand finished in eighth Saturday and seventh on Sunday. Teammate Madeline McLean was right behind Hillenbrand on Sunday, placing eighth. She placed 19th on Saturday.

Thomas Allen tied for sixth, and Marsh Gooding tied for 10th on Sunday, and Cory McConnell skied to a seventh-place finish on Saturday, rounding out the Winter Sports Club’s top ten finishes for the two-day downhill competition. McConnell placed 12th on Sunday.

One other highlight Davis noted was Lane Shipley’s 12th-place finish Saturday. Shipley had started in 36th before moving up 24 spots.

The Winter Sports Club had additional male racers competing. The following are their names and top result from the weekend: T.J. Cannon (13th), Andrew Berglund (18th), Andy White (29th), Graham Hogrefe (31st) and Dylan Roberts (37th).

Other female finishers for the SSWSC and their top finishes were: Jennifer Allen (11th), Kathleen Lyon (12th), Suzanne Allbright (13th), Tierney Heneage (17th), Priska Sorensen (20th) and Anabelle McLean (23rd).
