Drunken man arrested for assaulting Steamboat police officer

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — A 27-year-old transient man faces a felony second-degree assault charge after getting into an altercation Thursday night with a Steamboat Springs Police Department officer.

At about 8:20 p.m., police were called to a report of a man passed out in the grass in the area of Central Park Plaza.

Carl Johnson

Police knew the man was Carl L. Johnson because they had dealt with him earlier in the day when he had an alcohol level of 0.274. Police released Johnson to a sober friend at that time.

When police contacted Johnson later in the day, he was unconscious.

After waking up, he became disoriented and agitated, according to an arrest affidavit. Johnson then began pacing and yelling. At one point, Johnson tried to grab the officer, according to the affidavit. The officer grabbed Johnson’s arms and hand and put Johnson on the ground.

Johnson swung at the officer, striking him multiple times, according to the affidavit. The officer called for help and eventually was able to get control of Johnson.

The officer sustained an injury to his knee, and his badge and body camera were knocked off at some point.

Johnson was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center and then booked into jail.
