Drivers in Steamboat could see some relief today

Third Street intersection and Lincoln to Seventh to open today

Jack Weinstein

— Steamboat drivers fed up with the downtown construction should get some relief today.

The Third Street intersection is scheduled to open and so will traffic in all four lanes to Seventh Street, Jody Patten, project information manager for Scott Contracting, said Monday. That would allow for turns at all intersections and street parking on Lincoln Avenue from Third to Seventh.

The north side of Lincoln Avenue was closed Monday evening for temporary road striping, with traffic diverted onto Oak Street.

As part of the $5.6 million Colorado Department of Transportation project to replace asphalt with concrete on U.S. Highway 40 from Third to 13th streets, recessed striping less than an inch below the surface of the concrete road will be completed in fall, after Scott Contracting resumes work after the Labor Day holiday weekend.

Scott Contracting will suspend work June 30 for the height of the summer tourist season. Work will resume Sept. 7 with a contractual completion date set for Nov. 18.

Crews are on target to complete paving on the south side of Lincoln Avenue from 13th to Ninth streets and have the street cleared of all equipment and traffic control devices by the end of June, Patten said. She said a recent stretch of good weather contributed to Scott Contracting working farther east on the south side of Lincoln than originally planned.

"It looks great. We're making great progress," she said.

Patten said the final bulb-outs on the north side of Lincoln Avenue would be paved Wednesday or Thursday.

She said the paving of the connections from Lincoln Avenue to the side streets also would continue.

Scott Contracting had hoped to open the 13th Street intersection by Wednesday, Patten said, but that may not happen until Thursday or Friday.
