Doug Monger: Changing political affiliation to represent the views of Routt County

I have changed my political affiliation from a Democrat to an Independent.  I did this based on my frustration with the current political arena nationally, and mostly, statewide. It has gotten to a new level as the progressives are bringing Boulder County ideals to the governorship, State House and State Senate, most recently with little or no legislative debate and controlled by a bullying attitude.

I am the same moral person that 1) registered as a Democrat age 17, 2) represented three generations of hard-working, labor-core principled American Democrats, 3) Is a fourth-generation rancher, living off the land while not desecrating our lifeblood 4) was elected as your Democrat commissioner in 2000.

The “New” Democratic Party has evolved away from my forefathers’ ideals. It would be disingenuous for me to continue being affiliated with this party, which has drifted away from me and many others.

The divide between the Democratic Party and the Republican Party has never appeared as divisive as it is today. In my humble opinion, the most radical 10 percent of the right run the Republican Party and the most radical 10 percent of the left run the Democratic Party. Meanwhile 80 percent of us are left unrepresented. Both parties continue to create extremist radical policies and ideals far outside of the mainstream.

Extremist ideals are now our government policies. Issues such as energy, crime, immigration, gun-rights, single-pay health care, capitalism/socialism, tear our county apart.

During my time as a county commissioner, I have agonized over affiliating with partisan, state and national issues, wanting instead to concentrate on keeping Routt County operations and lifestyle clean, wholesome and productive. As a rancher and as a commissioner, I like to sleep soundly at night, I live by the concept of “Do It Right.”

My change to an Independent will not alter how I work and represent our county as commissioner, will not affect how I will work with my fellow commissioners, will not change the co-management of our Routt County over the last 18 years and will not change how I interact with my constituents on county issues.

As an Independent, I will direct my energy toward representing the views of the unrepresented 80 percent. I will continue to champion a great county in a great state based on fiscal responsibility, sound environmental standards, responsible growth, equality and economic prosperity.

Routt County commissioner, District #2
