Domestic violence nonprofit to host open house in Steamboat

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — A local nonprofit that helps victims of domestic violence is putting out a call for volunteers.

Advocates Building Peaceful Communities will host an open house from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday to show off its spruced up office at 445 Anglers Dr. 2E, which is above Fiesta Jalisco.

With help from volunteers and donations, Advocates rearranged furniture, painted and installed new carpet.

Executive Director Lisel Petis said it will be an opportunity for members of the community to learn more about Advocates and what the organization does.

Following the open house from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Advocates will host an orientation for anyone who is interested in becoming a crisis line volunteer.

At the orientation, people will learn about what goes into being a crisis line volunteer, including the time commitment, what training needs to be completed and when the training will be held.

Being a crisis line volunteer is how Petis got involved in helping domestic violence victims during college in Boulder.

“Being a crisis line volunteer is an incredibly rewarding experience,” Petis said.
