High school football player commits to California school

Sailors wide receiver and defensive back Chris Dombey will continue his football career at Azusa Pacific University in Los Angeles next season.

Dombey was interested in playing collegiate football in a warmer environment and found the perfect fit in California, he said.

Azusa Pacific is an independent National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics school, and the Cougars won the NAIA national championship in 1998.

Dombey has been in contact with Azusa Pacific coaches since his junior season, when he sent video footage to Los Angeles. The coaching staff evaluated Dombey and actively began recruiting him during his senior season.

Dombey, who played as wide receiver and defensive back for the Sailors, said he was recruited primarily as a receiver but would welcome the opportunity to play defense if given the choice.

He will move to Los Angeles in late June or early July to get settled and begin workouts with his teammates. Coaches have indicated that Dombey will not red-shirt and likely will be used right away, pending his workouts once he arrives.

During his senior season, Dombey caught 30 passes for 627 yards with six touchdowns, averaging 20.9 yards per reception.

He was named all-league by the Western Slope League coaches and earned first-team All-State recognition from The Denver Post. He also earned second-team All-State recognition from the Rocky Mountain News.
