Soroco High School Rams

The Soroco High School girls team lost Saturday for the first time this season, falling 51-46 against Moffat County in the championship game of the Cowboy Shootout tournament in Meeker.

Still, coach David Bruner said his team is coming off the weekend plenty pleased with its results.

“We had a great start to the year,” he said. “We played some quality competition. It was a lot of fun. We know we have a ton to work on now. We know that, but it’s all fixable.”

The Rams were within a point with two minutes remaining but couldn’t convert. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, made those crucial late-game baskets to pull away.

Chloe Veilleux scored 15 points to lead Soroco. DaKota Bruner had 12.

Bruner also won the tournament’s 3-point contest and was named to the all-tournament team. David Bruner, meanwhile, won a coach’s 3-point contest.

“It was a really fun weekend and a heck of a game,” he said. “If we keep progressing, it will all be a lot of fun by the end of the year.”
