District 2: Ken Brenner on the issues

Ken Brenner
City Council District II
Age: 49
Occupation: Massage therapist and strength and conditioning coach

Property Tax: Opposes the proposed property tax. Calls it a bait and switch tactic and says citizens expect their tax dollars to be spent on essential services first. Proposes a Tax Policy Committee. Supports decreasing sales tax by 2 percent and creating a property tax in a proportionate amount. If more revenue is needed, proposes increasing lodging tax.

Growth: Proposes the formation of a Growth Control Commission with representatives from business, community, city and county and staff. The commission’s ultimate job would be to recommend a growth strategy.

Chamber Funding: Says using vendor fees for marketing has been successful and should continue. Long term, would like to see a dedicated revenue stream, such as a 1 percent lodging tax, to fund the chamber.

Triple Crown: Would not move to end Triple Crown, but says before new ball fields are built wants to know where the fields would be, what they would cost, who would pay and how long Triple Crown guarantees tournaments for the fields.

Mount Werner Water Consolidation: Long-term goal is to consolidate. Says water commission has already agreed to equalize rates in all four districts for wastewater treatment. Is confident the two sides will reach an agreement given time.
