Diesel fuel spill results in citation

— A 40-year-old Ogden, Utah, man was cited for careless driving Monday morning after he lost control of the semi-trailer he was driving. The accident caused about 100 gallons of diesel to spill into a ditch south of Phippsburg.

Colorado State Patrol Trooper Tonya Cowan said James Lawther was driving a flatbed semi two or three miles south of Phippsburg on Colorado Highway 131 when the semi drifted into a ditch and skipped across Rout County Road 21B. Two of the semi’s fuel tanks tore off before the truck came to rest in the ditch.

Lawther was returning from delivering equipment to Twentymile Coal Co., Cowan said Tuesday.

The 100 gallons of diesel spilled into the ditch and an agricultural access road, Cowan said. Colorado State Patrol Haz-Mat teams from Glenwood Springs cleaned the spill by using absorption pads, Cowan said.

Lawther’s company, Tram Corp., also was expected to assist in the cleanup.

Cowan said Lawther was not speeding at the time of the accident, and she does not suspect drugs or alcohol to be contributing factors in the accident.

Lawther was wearing his seat belt and was treated on scene for “very minor injuries,” she said.
