Depth bites Hayden as Tigers boys lose at Vail Christian

— The Hayden High School boys basketball team strung together a solid first half at Vail Christian on Saturday, but limited depth killed the Tigers in the end.

Hayden was down by just five at halftime, 28-23, but got gassed down the stretch in a 60-37 loss. The Tigers now are 1-12 on the season.

“We played a good half, but we just aren’t very deep,” Hayden coach Jody Harvey said.

Leading scorer Carlos Valdez again paced the Tigers with 12 points. Senior Thomas Rauch tacked on eight more.

The Tigers have an extremely busy and tough week coming up. On Thursday, they’ll head to Meeker for a rescheduled game from January. They’ll come back and play at North Park on Friday before hosting West Grand on Saturday.

Meeker is the most difficult of the draw. The Cowboys are undefeated this winter. But Harvey has the North Park game on Friday circled as a contest his Tigers could squeak out if they play well. Hayden lost to North Park on Jan. 17 with a depleted roster from a team wide illness.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Harvey said. “That’s one I think we have a good chance in.”
