Deb Jansen: Incorrect headline

“Voters support School Board in denying Montessori charter school.” This is the headline that should have been in the Nov. 5 Steamboat Today reporting the result of the advisory question on the ballot. On Nov. 4, voters in Routt County overwhelmingly — 61 percent to 38 percent — showed their support for the decision of the Steamboat Springs School Board to deny an application for a proposed Montessori charter school.

On Nov. 5, the Steamboat Today reported in its headline, “Voters support Montessori.” With the numbers as written above, this is, at best, a reverse slant.

Because of the outstanding litigation the Steamboat Springs Montessori Board has pending against the Steamboat Springs School Board, it is the opinion of the District Accountability Committee that the newspaper should have been an absolutely reliable, unbiased source for election results. Further, it is the opinion of the DAC that the newspaper should have printed a retraction that carried at least as much force as the original reverse headline.

The School Board organized the ballot question so that it could be informed and aware of the community’s stance on the proposed charter school. One can only hope that the court will read the numbers as the voters intended and not just skim the incorrect headline.
