Deadline for voter registration today

— Election Day is almost a month away, but there is no time to stall if you aren’t registered to vote: Today is the last day to sign up.

Election officials were bracing for a busy day. It’s common for a lot of people to register on the last day, Routt County Clerk Kay Weinland said.

In the Nov. 1 election, voters will be have many choices to make, including decisions about school board members, City Council officials and how tax dollars should be spent.

It only makes sense for residents to want to take part in local elections, Weinland said.

“Democracy is the foundation of this country, and local politics is the best way to take part in democracy,” she said.

People who have moved should also fill out a voter registration form so they can vote at the correct precinct.

No one can fill out a voter registration form for someone else, Weinland said, so if you have moved or need to register, you must sign the form yourself.

“It protects the integrity of the process,” she said. “You can’t make changes for other people.”

To register:

Visit the Routt County Clerk and Recorder’s office in the county courthouse, near Sixth Street and Lincoln Avenue.

Log on to the county Web site at, go to the Clerk and Recorder’s page, and print off the voter registration form. It must be postmarked today.

If you get a new driver’s license today, you can register to vote at the same time.

Weinland reminds voters that if they want to avoid voting on Election Day, they can also vote early from Oct. 17 to Oct. 28 at the county courthouse.

“It’s a popular option that gets really good turnout,” Weinland said.

If you are unable to vote at the courthouse or won’t be in town, you can have a ballot sent to you. The last day to request an absentee ballot is Oct. 21.
