Custom frame shop opens doors on west side, offering customers options for showcasing most treasured items

Laurie Buccino started her framing business in her home more than a decade ago, but this spring she moved Masterpiece Custom Framing into its first brick-and-mortar location on the west side of Steamboat Springs.
“This is my first storefront. In the past, I’ve worked out of my home, garage and basement,” Buccino said of her business. “We put a lot of work into remodeling this space. We didn’t just want a frame shop where you walk in and there’s just frames everywhere, but a place where it is nice to decompress and relax.”
Masterpiece Custom Framing opened in March and is located at 2851 Riverside Plaza, Unit 120, facing U.S. Highway 40. The space may be new for Buccino, but the art of framing things that are important to people is not. She has more than a decade of experience in the business.
“I had a friend of mine that was ready to sell his business and retire, so he asked if it was something I might be interested in,” Buccino said. “So I went over and looked around his place, and he demonstrated framing something small like a postcard, and I just fell in love with it”
The custom frame shop offers a wide selection, with more than 100 different frames displayed. She said those that don’t find what they want or have something particular in mind can special order and she will complete the job when the materials arrive.
“I have done 10-foot frames, and I can handle pretty much any size,” Buccino said. “I can do shadow boxes, float frames, double pane frames where you can see from both sides. We can frame jerseys, crochet pieces, cross stitch, oil paintings, you name it, anything.”
She said most orders can be completed in 24 hours, and if she must order a frame or a mat it takes about a week. She can also cut mats and can do glass repairs.
“I love the challenge of doing multiple mats, with multiple openings on a mat,” Buccino said.
“With store bought frames you get a very limited selection of specific styles and sizes,” she added. “I can do any size, odd sizes, large sizes and oversized pieces. We offer so many more options for customers to choose.”
Masterpiece Custom Framing is open 10:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and 1-6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
“There is always a need for custom framing. Whether it is some valuable art piece that you bought on an auction, or your fourth-grader’s art project — anything can be framed, and it can look amazing.”
