Cross country ski racers turn out for Steamboat Springs event

— Local cross country ski racing got underway Saturday with the annual New Years Relay event at the Steamboat Ski Touring Center in Steamboat Springs.

The event drew nearly 70 athletes, and they split into teams of three to tackle the trails.

The trio of Brian Tate, Finn O’Connell and Evan Weinman won the day’s longest race, 21.6 kilometers, finishing in 55 minutes, 46 seconds, just 22 seconds ahead of the squad of Josh Smullin, Max Scrimgeour and John Schafer. Smullin registered the day’s fastest lap time on the 7.2K leg.



Jon Freckleton, TJ Thrasher and Barkley Robinson teamed up for third place.

TJ Thrasher, John Thrasher and Tristan Thrasher won a 6K relay race while Reilly Mewborn, Waverly Gebhardt and Avery Harrington won a 10.8K race.



Upcoming races include an event Jan. 11 at Home Ranch in North Routt County, the Steamboat Stampede on Feb. 1, the Ski Haus Classic on Feb. 8 and the Catamount Marathon on Feb. 22.
