Crime of the Week: Be aware of Windows technical services scam

Local law enforcement agencies have seen a recent rise in computer facilitated thefts. One of the main scams is coming from a group identifying themselves as Windows Technical Support. Citizens should know that they will never receive an unsolicited call from Microsoft.

How the scam works: You may be contacted by someone offering an antivirus/anti-hacking program for your computer. You purchase the program through a credit card and they contact you to say there was a mistake in the payment and need to reimburse your account and uninstall the antivirus/anti-hacking software. They ask to download a software application such as TeamViewer to your computer and verify that the money has been deposited into your account. While you are verifying that the money has being deposited into your account, the scammers are able to access your account through TeamViewer and change your password, which enables them to gain control of your bank account. After this, they will maintain control of your account and continue to harass and annoy you with further requests for money.

How to stay safe: Never allow someone you do not know or trust to install an application that permits remote access to your computer. Examples of these applications are TeamViewer, Remote Desktop, GoToMyPC or LogMeIn.

Law enforcement has been able to track money lost by residents of Steamboat Springs to foreign countries. Recovery of stolen funds from your bank may be very difficult. Foreign banks have not been willing to return the illegally gained funds.
