Crawford wins women’s race, followed by Gmeiner
Locals dominate moguls event
Steamboat Springs — Local skiers dominated the steep pitches of Voo Doo ski run Thursday and the top spots in the Rocky Mountain Regional Championships.
Steamboat Springs skiers held the top two positions in both the women’s and men’s standings following the completion of the junior moguls event.
Lauren Crawford scored 23.46 points to beat Winter Sports Club teammate Gina Gmeiner in the women’s junior moguls.
Team Summit’s Jenny Haywood was third and Alison Levy of Ski Club Vail was fourth.
“I was pretty psyched to win,” Crawford said after the event.
Crawford blew out after the first air but was able to get back up and finish the course.
“I knew that I needed a strong second run to win. I couldn’t make any major mistakes,” Crawford said.
Crawford was able to do just that on her second attempt and held on to beat out Gmeiner. The win should help Crawford, who has been battling back problems the past couple of seasons, gain some major confidence as she moves into junior nationals, world juniors and the U.S. National Championships later this season.
“I guess this event was a warmup for the junior nationals,” Crawford said. “It was nice to get back in the gates and practice competition.”
Jordan Chiovarelli earned the top spot in the men’s standings with a score of 24.79. It was just enough to slip past teammate Jarrett Arguelles, who netted 23.91 points.
Travis Redd of the Aspen Valley Ski Team was third and John Eaton of Winter Park was fourth.
“We had a lot of great young talent out there,” said Wendy Allen, Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club freestyle director.
In addition to the top two spots, the Winter Sports Club’s Maryann Skraba also took fifth, Caterina Mader was sixth and Celia Scanzo was eighth. Patty Hanley came in 13th and Jenny Rose Lee was 14th.
Other top Steamboat finishers in the men’s event included David Schwanke in ninth, Charlie MacArthur in 10th, Kyle Ewing in 13th and Luke Belz in 16th. Broc Sheue was 18th, Abe Maynard was 22nd, Bo Randolph was 24th, Paul Khuri was 25th, Nick Bucci was 28th and Daniel MacArthur was 37th.
The Rocky Mountain Regional Championships will continue today with the championship moguls. The field will be slightly smaller but will not be limited by the age of the athlete.
The competition will start at 10 a.m. at the Voo Doo mogul course. The final event of the week the dual moguls will take place on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
