Craig man killed in severe-weather crash on U.S. 40

Icy road conditions blamed in tragic accident

A severe-weather crash on U.S. Highway 40 at milepost 118 west of Milner resulted in a fatality at 4:32 p.m. Tuesday, according to Colorado State Patrol.

Daniel Sundar Baker, 38, of Craig, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Routt County coroner.

According to the state patrol, the crash involved Baker’s passenger vehicle and a semi-truck pulling a trailer driving westbound, as well as a pickup truck pulling a trailer driving eastbound.

Baker’s vehicle lost control due to icy road conditions and spun into the eastbound lane, colliding its right side into the front of the eastbound pickup truck.

The passenger vehicle then collided its rear with the trailer attached to the semi-truck, crossed back over into the westbound lane and collided its rear with the front of another passenger vehicle, then crashed into the guardrail.

The state patrol also said that both the drivers of the pickup truck and the fourth vehicle sustained minor injuries. A passenger in the pickup truck also sustained minor injuries.
