CPW announces opening delay of Yampa River ponds for waterfowl hunting

As the waterfowl hunting season was set to open on Saturday, Sept. 30, Colorado Park’s and Wildlife’s Steamboat Springs Area Office has announced that the ponds off of the Yampa River State Wildlife Area are not accessible.

The decision was made due to the delayed ability to maintain constant water flow from the Brock Ditch in order to refill the ponds, a reserve that was previously drained to prepare for future work on the ponds.

In past years, the ponds were drained in order for heavy equipment to have easier access to the property. In addition to help from Ducks Unlimited, the CPW plans to work on replacing the valves on the Brock Ditch with work continuing into next spring.
