County teams dive into league schedule

Melinda Mawdsley

After a two-week layoff from games and matches, high school activities for most Routt County teams resume this weekend.

Steamboat’s hockey team played one game during the break, tying Regis, 2-2, on Saturday. The Sailors (4-1-1 overall) continue the extended home portion of their schedule with a pair of league contests at 6:30 p.m. Friday against Rampart and at 1:30 p.m. Saturday against Wasson at Howelsen Ice Arena.

Both games will be broadcast on KRMR 100.5 or 107.3 FM.

The Steamboat wrestling team is the only other Routt County team with a home meet this weekend. The Sailors host Battle Mountain and Delta at 5 p.m. today at the high school gym.

Steamboat then heads to Gypsum for the Eagle Valley Tournament all day Saturday.

The Steamboat boys and girls basketball teams open Western Slope league play this weekend on the road against Delta and Palisade.

The Sailors girls (5-2) play at 6 p.m. Friday in Delta. The boys (5-2) follow at 7:30 p.m.

Steamboat then travels to Palisade on Saturday. The girls play at 4:30 p.m., and the boys play at 6 p.m.

Steamboat girls coach Steve Moos said the first practice back from break usually is a tough one, but the Sailors have had all week to prepare for this weekend’s games.

Before the break, Steamboat won two straight games on the road, defeating Rangely and Summit.

“We’re playing well in spurts,” Moos said. “Our shooting is a little spotty sometimes, but the effort has been good, and we’ve played good defense and rebounded well. Our hope is the shooting comes around as we get more comfortable playing with each other and with more confidence. I think it will come. We are getting the shots.”

Steamboat’s Alpine and Nordic ski teams each had one early season race before taking an extended break from high school competition. That break ends this weekend.

The Sailors Alpine team has a slalom race at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Aspen Highlands.

The Sailors Nordic team has a mass start skate ski race at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Aspen, as well.

The Soroco boys and girls also will hit the road with league games at Grand Valley on Friday.

The Rams boys (3-3) started the league season strong with an impressive win against North Park on Dec. 19 and look to remain undefeated in Western Slope play when they play at 8 p.m. Friday against the Cardinals.

The Soroco girls (3-3) look for their first league win at 6:30 p.m. against Grand Valley.

The Soroco and Hayden wrestling teams are at the Paonia tournament all day Saturday. Hayden also will take part in a triangular with Paonia and Antonito at 6 p.m. Friday in Paonia.

The Hayden boys and girls basketball teams have the weekend off. The Tigers resume play Jan. 13 when the girls and boys host Soroco at 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively.
