Council candidates take stage

Forum next week set to inform voters on issues

Danie Harrelson

— Residents of Steamboat Springs who are undecided about City Council candidates and issues in the upcoming Nov. 2 election are encouraged to attend next week’s forum designed to enlighten and inform voters.

The Steamboat Pilot & Today will be sponsoring “Decision 2001” at Olympian Hall at the Howelsen Hill complex Oct. 18.

“We felt it necessary to inform the voters of this community about the candidates who could be representing them and the issues that could negatively or positively impact them,” Steamboat Pilot & Today Editor Scott Stanford said. “This is their chance to hear from the candidates themselves.”

Those who attend can choose between two convenient times to attend during the noon hour or in the evening.

City Council candidates will present their stands on issues, and locals will address the pros and cons of proposed tax increases.

Written questions will be accepted from the audience, and Pilot & Today staff and KBCR-FM News Director Harper Louden will moderate the discussion.

Running for District 1 are Omar Campbell and Nancy Kramer. Running for District 2 are former council member Paul “Loui” Antonucci and council member Ken Brenner. Running for District 3 are Council President Pro Tem Kathy Connell and Darcy Trask. Running for the at-large position are Steve Ivancie and Kathi Meyer.

The issues addressed will cover all three ballot issues, including the 3-2-1 Transportation Tax, the Education Cost of Living Adjustment Tax and the Early Childhood Education Tax.

The Pilot & Today is still looking for people to present the downside of the COLA tax and the Early Childhood Tax to contact the newspaper.

During the week of Oct. 22-26, KBCR will host candidates every day beginning at 10 a.m.

“Decision 2001” was previously hosted by the Pilot and the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association.

The chamber will not be co-sponsoring the forum this year with the Pilot & Today because of its connection to one of the ballot issues.

Anyone interested in learning about the candidates and the issues are invited to attend the free forum. A meal, consisting of a freshly prepared sandwich, chips, dessert and drink, costs $9 and can be reserved by calling 871-4234.
