Connie Sigler: We are a republic

In regards to Thomas Friedman’s editorial in Thursday’s paper, I feel I must point out several errors in his statement concerning “The principle upon which our democracy is based: majority rule.”

Our country is NOT a democracy; it is a republic. And it is not based on majority rule.

A republic is a representative form of government where all people should be recognized. Note the Pledge of Allegiance: “And to the republic for which it stands.” Also note that in our Congress, we have the House of Representatives, representing not just the majority, but all people of each state.
