“When I first [moved], I did have insurance but I didn’t know any doctors. I knew the name Planned Parenthood. It was an easy choice when you don’t know any doctors. The staff was awesome. I went initially just to get an STD test and talk about birth control. They were the first providers who had talked to me about IUDs. It was years of trying to find the right birth control method and I finally have relief and feel like myself.

You may have heard that Planned Parenthood is known across the country as a compassionate and reliable provider of reproductive health services, but did you also know that there is a location right here in Steamboat Springs? The local health center, along with 23 other health centers in Colorado, New Mexico and southern Nevada make up Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains. We proudly provide high-quality reproductive and sexual health services such as annual wellness exams, Pap tests, breast and cervical cancer screenings, STD testing and treatment, HIV services and birth control, among many other services.

Planned Parenthood has been providing quality reproductive health services in the Steamboat community since 1972, and we serve more than 800 patients annually.  Many of our patients visit our local health center to learn more about birth control and find the method that is right for them. Here at Planned Parenthood, we believe in empowering our patients to make informed decisions about their reproductive health, and we know how important it is for our patients to get the facts. For many patients, long-acting reversible contraceptives, also known as LARCs, are a safe, convenient and reliable option.

The intrauterine device is a popular choice for many patients, with both hormonal and non-hormonal options to meet each patient’s unique needs. Patients come to the health center for IUD insertion and can go about their busy lives knowing their birth control method will be effective for five or even 10 years to come, depending on the type. IUDs are safe with low risk of infection or complication and can be used by women who have given birth previously as well as those who have not experienced pregnancy.

Some IUDs can remain effective for up to 12 years, and all can be removed quickly and easily if a patient decides they’re ready to start a family or wants to switch to another method of birth control. Curious about the cost of an IUD? Pay us a visit to learn more about the Choose When grant, which can cover up to $500 toward the cost of your LARC, or about the many other grants and programs available to help you receive the care and services you need, regardless of income.

We discuss your lifestyle and help you find a birth control method that works for you, not the other way around. Planned Parenthood is a trusted provider of essential health care services right here in the Steamboat community and we are here to answer your questions and help you determine the perfect fit for you.

Maia Arthur is the manager of the Planned Parenthood Steamboat health center.  Arthur studied access to reproductive health and has been passionate about providing quality care ever since.
