Community Agriculture Alliance: 96th Routt County Fair kicks off
Steamboat Springs — We’ve come a long way since 1914, but the Routt County Fair still is “Where Friends Meet.” With continued county support and thousands of hours from dedicated volunteers, today’s Routt County Fair is held on the same tract of land as it was nearly a century ago. That is quite an accomplishment and indicator of what this community was, is and strives to perpetuate.
The Routt County Fair Advisory Board, working with the Routt County Board of Commissioners, is proud to honor the traditions and heritage of this valley at an event where everyone can find entertainment, friendly competition and celebrate our land’s bounty — and where agriculture and livestock producers can exhibit the fruits of their labor in the fellowship of friends and neighbors. As one of Routt County’s longest running events, the Routt County Fair is 96 years young and going strong.
The Routt County Fair has been held on the same 37-acre tract of land where it was launched 96 years ago. Stories made and told sitting in the grandstands and leaning on the fence railing reflect the heritage of Yampa Valley’s ranching, mining and recreation communities.
Since the grandstands were built in 1916, the Fair Advisory Board has hosted champion riders and legendary bucking stock. Since 4-H clubs were organized in the 1920s and a junior livestock sale launched in 1959, clubs are generating in excess of $100,000 to purchase livestock or fund college tuition. Since exhibits were added in 1929, the Routt County Fair has encouraged education and excellence in youth, production standards for cattlemen and woolgrowers, and civic pride in visitors.
The handiworks of local artists, gardeners, cooks and 4-H youths are displayed in the Exhibit Hall where you will find hand-carved furniture, quilts, baked goods, produce, flowers, canned goods, photographs and more. Prizes are awarded to the best in each category, and everyone is encouraged to enter.
Participate in The Longevity Project
The Longevity Project is an annual campaign to help educate readers about what it takes to live a long, fulfilling life in our valley. This year Kevin shares his story of hope and celebration of life with his presentation Cracked, Not Broken as we explore the critical and relevant topic of mental health.
Routt County youths also are showcased at the fair. Members of the 4-H and FFA programs spend the entire year working on projects that culminate at the fair and they are to be commended for their enthusiasm and hard work. The junior livestock sale offers the opportunity to bid on great tasting Routt County beef, pork, lamb, goat, turkey or rabbit. The purchase of livestock at this event is an investment in the future of our youths, because most of the proceeds are set aside in a fund for the seller’s college education.
Don’t miss out on a minute of all the excitement and tradition at the Routt County Fair. Enjoy a funnel cake, hearty barbecue, the livestock and horse shows, the new Rocky Mountain fish and chips dinner with live cowboy poetry, the demolition derby, the ranch rodeo, and other entertaining events. If you happen to see one of our hard-working volunteers, remember that they deserve a heartfelt “thanks.” These dedicated people truly are the ones who make our county fair the best one around.
