Comeback catches up to Sailors in road loss

— The Steamboat Springs High School football team fell in heartbreaking fashion Friday playing on the road at Eagle Valley.

The final score was 28-21.

After building a three-touchdown lead, the Sailors let the game slip away, and a fumble deep in Devils’ territory with about 2 minutes remaining in the game ruined the team’s last best chance to tie.

Still, it was the best performance in nearly a month for Steamboat, which has struggled mightily against some of the league’s best teams. Friday night on the road, it rocked another of those top-tier teams back on its heels. Quarterback Zach Holm and running back Joe DeLine gobbled up yards in the first half with an option attack, each picking up early rushing touchdowns as the team scored on its first two possessions.

Turnovers took a toll as one 46-yard fumble return got Eagle Valley on the board late in the first half, 21-7. Another return, this one an interception off a deflected Holms pass, helped tie the game at 21 all.

Finally, after moving the ball down the field with big pass plays from Holms to Matt Hansen, one final fumble finished Steamboat off as Eagle Valley recovered at its own 11 yard line.

Steamboat, 2-5 and 0-4 in the league, returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday at home against Rifle.
