Colorado Republicans start choosing favorite state treasurer candidates in straw polls

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Denver County Republicans gave District Attorney Brett Barkey’s campaign for Colorado state treasurer a boost this week when they chose him as their top candidate in a straw poll.

Barkey, the DA for Routt, Moffat and Grand counties, earned 34.6 percent of the vote in the straw poll, topping four other Republican candidates who are expected to vie for a place on the ballot by earning the support of enough delegates at the state assembly next month.

Routt County Treasurer Brita Horn came in third place with 18 percent of the vote.

Routt County’s candidates can find optimism in different sets of straw polls taken in recent weeks.

For example, Horn placed third and topped Barkey in the Pueblo County straw poll by earning 16 percent of the vote.

The results in the straw polls aren’t binding, but they do help candidates gauge their potential level of support at the state assembly.

Barkey, Horn and other Republican candidates will find out April 14 who will qualify for the primary ballot when the party gathers at the Coors Event Center in Boulder.

Coloradopolitics.com is reporting that despite the straw polls, there’s “scant data” about the delegate preference for the candidates.

The news outlet reported it’s possible three candidates could be successful in earning the spot on the ballot at the assembly if each takes at least 30 percent support from the delegates.
