Colorado Girl Scout councils merge

— “On my honor, I will try:

To serve God and my country,

To help people at all times,

And to live by the Girl Scout Law.”

Soon, Girl Scouts in Colorado will be saying the same promise, but under new management.

Because of national changes, Colorado will combine its five Girl Scouts councils into one council to govern the state’s troops.

The Girl Scout Movement will help strengthen the organization statewide, combining resources of the five councils to effectively serve some 42,000 participants.

Girl Scouts, which is celebrating its 95th anniversary in 2007, is the largest leadership organization for girls in the world.

There are over 200 girls participating in 25 troops in Routt County. The merge will turn Routt County’s Girl Scout Council, Chipeta Council, into the statewide council.

“We will continue to provide exceptional programs for girls throughout the realignment,” said Sue Conry, Chief Executive Officer of Girl Scouts of Chipeta Council. “Then, with a statewide council, our communities can look to Girl Scouting for expanded opportunities for girls, enhanced services for adult volunteers, continued outreach to underserved populations, and vibrant partnerships with the greater community to meet our commitment to girls.”

Like Chipeta Council, the statewide council will be a nonprofit organization financed by contributions, grants, fundraising events and cookie sale proceeds.

“We see the lives of girls changing,” national Girl Scouts CEO Kathy Cloninger said. “So Girl Scouts is mobilizing our expertise to build on our strengths, resolve our challenges, and implement actions to ensure that we continue to be the bet personal leadership development program for girls.”
