College to start spring set of classes

— At Colorado Mountain College this spring, you can learn to write from a published author and learn to cook from local chefs.

Spring classes begin Monday at the college’s Steamboat Springs campus. Although the college — which this week hired veteran educator Kerry Hart of Laramie County Community College in Wyoming as its new dean –aintains its focus on the books, several noncredit classes offered this spring are more about personal enrichment than academics.

Six-week courses offered by instructor Edith Lynn Hornik-Beer, for example, will teach students how to write a book or essay that will sell to publishers and editors.

“Even when you have all the material you need, if it’s not organized, it won’t make a book,” Hornik-Beer said. “We will do certain exercises in class that will help the writer organize and express him or herself better. “

Hornik-Beer said much of her teaching comes from personal experience.

“I’ve published five books and more articles than I can count, both here and abroad,” she said. Her resume includes publications in The New York Times, Newsday and the Denver Post.

Hornik-Beer lives in New York City for six months of the year, and she said she takes advantage of the networking opportunities available in that city for writers.

“When I am in New York, I make it my business to talk with editors there,” she said, mentioning two editors she recently spoke with who are starting new magazines that will be looking for creative material.

Both classes will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. “Writing an Essay That Sells” meets Mondays until Feb. 27, and “Writing a Book That Sells” meets Tuesdays until Feb. 28.

The classes cost $65.

“Students have signed up already, but there’s still room (in both classes),” Hornik-Beer said this week.

Also available this spring are cooking classes taught by chefs Dom Riggio, of Riggio’s Fine Italian Food in Steamboat, and Jacques Wilson. One-day classes in cooking tomato sauce, chicken soup, casseroles and chocolates are offered for $15 each.
