Cold front approaching Steamboat early this week
Local meteorologist Mike Weissbluth, who posts twice a week local forecasts for the Yampa Valley to SnowAlarm.com, said Sunday afternoon that cold temperatures arriving in the area would bring sunny skies and a chance for snowfall.
But how much accumulation would occur remains unclear.
“Sadly, the short-range weather forecast models disagree on snowfall amounts for the entire duration of the storm through Tuesday afternoon, forcing my admittedly broad snowfall estimates,” he wrote.
With “an inch or two” possible at mid-mountain at the Steamboat Ski Resort by Monday morning, Weissbluth said, “based upon the more optimistic model” snowfall could be more likely to accumulate by sunset, “with 1-4 inches possible.”
“But there is not a lot of moisture associated with the front and combined with an even drier reinforcing surge of cold air early Tuesday, there could be another inch or two overnight Monday and 1-4 inches during the day Tuesday,” added Weissbluth.
The local meteorologist said the approaching cold front was expected to break a strong “temperature inversion” present in the Yampa Valley with low temperatures in Steamboat expected to rise from the single digits to the low teens.
“But the relief will be brief as high temperatures behind the front on Monday and Tuesday are only expected to be in the high teens or low 20s, over 10 degrees below our average of 31 F,” added Weissbluth.
