Club skiers advance with last chance

Caroline Gilchrist races last weekend in an event at Ski Cooper. After competing in a series of super-G, slalom and giant slalom races, she placed high enough in the overall weekend standings to advance to the U14 Regional Championships, which will take place in Steamboat Springs.

— It was the last chance, and Caroline Gilchrist took advantage.

Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Alpine skiers traveled last weekend to Ski Cooper for their last opportunity to qualify for the regional championships, set for March 16 to 20 in Steamboat Springs.

The event was only open to athletes who hadn’t already made the cut, and it took a long, solid weekend of racing, strong results in super-G, giant slalom and slalom. The top three boys and girls racers would earn a trip to Steamboat, and Gilchrist made the cut at the U14 level. She won one race, a slalom, then had three other top-10 finishes, including a second in giant slalom to secure second-place overall for the weekend.

Other top results included those of Emily Watson, who was second and fourth in super-G races, sixth in a GS and sixth and 10th in slalom. She landed seventh overall.

Nicole Nolting was second and third in giant slalom races and fifth in a slalom, setting up a fifth-place overall finish. Bryn Eliason had a fifth in super-G, a fourth in slalom and seventh- and 10th-place showings in giant slalom to finish ninth overall.

Sophia Gowdy was eighth in a slalom and Emma Ferer 11th.

For the boys, Max Rotermund, back on snow after recovering from an ACL injury, was fourth in giant slalom. Brooks Overstake was 13th in super-G.

U16 skiers shine

Club skiers also scored well at the U16 level.

There, Steamboat had one skier just fast enough to make the cut for regional championships, Emily Schneider, who was first alternate after the event and learned this week she’d be making the trip to U16 regionals in Vail.

Last weekend in Ski Cooper, she was second in a slalom race and eighth twice in GS.

Leo Davies was also fast throughout the weekend, finishing fourth overall. He just missed out on advancing to regionals but still put down some of the best finishes of his season.

“We had some strong results across the board,” coach Ben Brown said. “Those kids were excited to finish out the season strong.”

Davies was second twice in slalom races. Bode Flanigan, returning from an injury, was fourth and fifth in GS, then fourth in a slalom. Eliza Fox was ninth in a super-G.

“They didn’t qualify for championships, but they definitely competed very hard to make it,” Brown said. “They had some of the best skiing they’ve had all year.”
