Gallagher named teen of month

Kaitlin Gallagher, a Steamboat Springs High School senior, is the Optimist Club’s teen of the month for October.

In school, Gallagher, who is the student body secretary, serves on a number of student groups, including Senior Leadership, women’s choir, the Periscope student newspaper, Peer Education, Advocates, Suicide Prevention Team, Harmony Flute Ensemble, independent choir study, prom committee and the volleyball and soccer teams.

Gallagher is co-president of the school’s National Honor Society, a cast member in the school’s “The Sound of Music” production, director of the student choir, a tutor of students in math, a four-year member of the school’s honor roll, a piano and voice student, an academic letter winner, a homecoming attendant, a nominee for the National Writing Competition, the Outstanding Student of America and the coveted Boettcher Scholarship and was named an Outstanding Literature and History student.

Gallagher also attends several music camps and seminars, including the Colorado State University Music Camp.

She has worked as a sales clerk and restaurant hostess. She also organizes Christmas carols, has traveled to the Blackfoot Indian Reservation, Puerto Rico and Mexico for volunteer mission work and is the Sunday school teacher at the Methodist Church.

Gallagher hopes to attend Boston College in the fall and wants to be an attorney. She advises fellow students: “Don’t give up when you still have something left to give; nothing’s really over until the moment you stop trying.”
