— The city of Steamboat Springs is working to figure out how to connect three busy hotels on the south end of the city to the Yampa River Core Trail and other sidewalks.

Guests at the La Quinta Hotel, the Fairfield Inn and the Holiday Inn currently can only gain access to the city’s established network of trails by riding their bikes or walking along the shoulder of a busy U.S. Highway 40.

The new concrete trail connections would allow these guests and others to more safely and conveniently access the Walton Creek Trail and the Core Trail.

However, city officials are still evaluating the feasibility of making the connection.

“There are three different ways you could connect folks on that side of the city to the Core Trail, but they all have issues,” Assistant City Manager and Government Programs Manager Winnie DelliQuadri said.

The city is currently seeking proposals for making the trail connections.

DelliQuadri said there may be rights of way that would need to be obtained and a possible pedestrian bridge that would need to be built over Walton Creek.

A bridge, she said, could be costly.

Planning for the potential project is being funded by $40,000 in lodging tax dollars voters here approved to spend on a wide range of trail improvements.

In other trail and sidewalk news, the city recently completed a project that connects the base of the Steamboat Ski Area to several residences and condominiums.

The new sidewalks were constructed on Village Drive between the Meadowlark Condominiums and Walton Creek Road.

The project was accomplished thanks to a public/private partnership.
